The goal of the competition is to collect the best experiences and practical implementations from inventors and innovators in the field of energy efficiency that can be applied in everyday life by private households of ordinary citizens, and to disseminate the collected materials from the competition participants among environmentally conscious and engaged members of the public.

Project “Sun for Good” in Kharkiv Region: Eco-Workshop for Orphans and Foster Families

In the Kharkiv region, at the family-type children’s village “Otradne,” activists from the NGOs “NOVA Energy” and “Energy of Peace” held an eco-workshop titled “Sun for Good” for orphans, foster parents, and community activists. The workshop provided practical advice on how to use solar energy for everyday needs.

During the workshop, the NOVA Energy team demonstrated how to assemble two types of solar collectors. A solar collector designed to provide hot water was assembled on-site in front of the participants. Children, foster parents, and other attendees had the opportunity to actively participate in assembling the solar system. There was such a high level of enthusiasm that there weren’t enough tools for everyone.

As part of the project, organizers assembled 9 solar collectors to supply three houses in the “Otradne” village with hot water.

Andriy Anatoliyovych Andriyenko, President of the Kharkiv Regional Charity Foundation “Social Service Assistance” and head of the family-type children’s village “Otradne,” emphasized that the installation and operation of solar systems will help reduce hot water expenses by up to 50%.

The second part of the eco-workshop involved assembling a multi-functional solar collector that will allow for the efficient and high-quality drying of large quantities of fruit during the summer and autumn seasons using only solar energy. The completed structure was tested for durability and heat transfer, and then handed over to the village.

The territory of “Otradne” includes a fruit orchard, so its residents will now be able to provide themselves with dried fruits and potentially offset their utility expenses.

The “Sun for Good” project is implemented within the “Climate Workshop” initiative and supported by the international climate movement 350.org.

Today, climate change is a major global issue. More and more people are joining efforts to address this urgent threat. Renewable energy is one way to mitigate the climate crisis caused by high CO₂ emissions. This eco-workshop in Kharkiv was a small but meaningful local contribution to the fight against climate change.

Economic Info: Energy Efficiency and Family Savings

Economic calculation for installing solar collectors on the roof of the Otradne workshop to provide hot water:

Based on the technical characteristics of the village, estimated daily hot water needs, and solar energy potential:

  • One collector heats 200 liters of water per day during the non-heating season (to 60–65°C).

  • 9 collectors = 1,800 liters/day = 1.8 m³/day, or 54 m³ per month.

Hot Water Cost Using Gas and Electricity (as of April & September 2015):

  • Gas (over 200 m³): 7.18 UAH/m³

Electricity tariffs (April 2015):

  • First block (up to 100 kWh): 0.366 UAH/kWh

  • Second block (100–600 kWh): 0.63 UAH/kWh

  • Third block (over 600 kWh): 1.479 UAH/kWh (as of Sept 2015)

Cost Comparison for Heating 1 m³ Water from 10°C to 65°C

  • Gas consumption: 7.11 m³/month

  • Monthly cost using gas: 7.11 × 7.18 × 54 ≈ 2,756.7 UAH

  • Electricity consumption: 67.4 kWh/month

  • Monthly cost using electricity:

    • Low tariff (0.366 UAH): 1,332 UAH

    • Mid tariff (0.63 UAH): 2,293 UAH

    • High tariff (1.407 UAH): 5,095 UAH

Public Hot Water Tariff in Kharkiv (2015): ~38 UAH/m³
→ Monthly savings potential: Over 2,000 UAH

Conclusion:

Using solar collectors at the Otradne village can reduce gas usage and save up to 2,700 UAH/month, or 12,000 UAH per season.

For those not yet ready to install solar collectors:

  • In summer: Use electric water heaters! Even at 0.63 UAH/kWh, it’s cheaper than gas at 7.18 UAH/m³.

  • In winter: If gas use is below 200 m³, heating with gas is cheaper. If above that threshold—electricity is more cost-effective.
