The family-type children’s village “Otradne” can already save up to 50% on hot water supply!

The eco-workshop “Sun for Good” in the Kharkiv region:

In the Otradne family‑style children’s village, activists from “NOVA Energy” and “Energy of Peace” held an eco-workshop for orphans, caregivers, and community volunteers. They shared practical tips on using solar energy for everyday household needs.

During the session, the NOVA Energy team demonstrated how to assemble two different types of solar collectors. One solar collector, designed to provide hot water, was built on-site. Children, caregivers, and other attendees actively participated—though there were more volunteers than tools!

As a result of the project, nine solar collectors were installed, currently providing hot water to three residences in Otradne.

Andriy A. Andriyenko, President of the Kharkiv Regional Charity Fund “Social Assistance Service” and head of the Otradne village, emphasized that the installation and operation of these solar systems can reduce hot water costs by up to 50%.

The second part of the workshop involved building a multi-functional solar dryer for producing dried fruits in summer and fall using only solar energy. The drying unit was tested for durability and efficiency, then handed over to the village. Given that Otradne has its own orchard, residents can now produce their own dried fruits—helping to offset household utility costs.

Project and Context

This initiative (“Sun for Good”) is part of the “Climate Workshop” framework, supported by the international climate movement 350.org. As global awareness of climate change grows, renewable energy projects like this become vital. Though local in scope, the workshop represents a meaningful contribution to climate change mitigation efforts.

Energy Efficiency: Cost-Savings at Otradne

Assumptions & Calculations (based on site specs, daily hot water demand, and solar potential):

  • One collector heats 200 L/day (to 60–65°C) during non-heating seasons.

  • Nine collectors = 1,800 L/day = 1.8 m³/day, or approximately 54 m³/month.

Utility Costs (April & September 2015 rates)

  • Gas: 7.18 UAH/m³

  • Electricity:

    • Apr: 0.366 UAH/kWh (≤100 kWh), 0.63 UAH/kWh (100–600 kWh), 1.479 UAH/kWh (>600 kWh)

    • Sep: 0.456 UAH/kWh, 0.789 UAH/kWh, 1.479 UAH/kWh

Heating 1 m³ of water (10 °C → 65 °C):

  • Gas usage: 7.11 m³ → approx 2,757 UAH/month

  • Electricity usage: 67.4 kWh/month:

    • At 0.366 UAH = 1,332 UAH

    • At 0.63 UAH = 2,293 UAH

    • At 1.407 UAH = 5,095 UAH

Public hot-water tariff in Kharkiv (2015): ~38 UAH/m³monthly savings potential is over 2,000 UAH.

Conclusion: A solar collector system at Otradne not only reduces gas use but saves up to 2,700 UAH/month (and up to 12,000 UAH per heating season).

 Tips for Families Without Solar Systems:

  • Summer: Use electric water heaters—0.63 UAH/kWh yields cheaper hot water than gas at 7.18 UAH/m³.

  • Winter: If household gas use ≤200 m³, gas heating is cheaper; above that, electricity is more economical.

This eco-initiative shows how small local actions can contribute to energy efficiency, cost savings, and climate resilience—all while strengthening community engagement in Kharkiv.
